We regret to pass on to you that Resiterstown (Baltimore Co, MD FD) Volunteer Firefighter Gene Kirchner has passed away following critical injuries in last weeks dwelling fire in which a civilian was killed. FF Kirchner was injured in that Reisterstown fire on April 24. He was found inside the building, was removed, treated and was taken to Baltimore Shock Trauma. Two days ago it was announced that he was in critical but stable condition and would be transferred to a rehab center. FF Kirchner was pronounced dead early this afternoon at Shock Trauma. "BCoFD's thoughts are with his family at this difficult time," said Baltimore County Public Safety spokesperson Elise Armacost. Resiterstown Firefighters have immediately honored Kirchner's memory as just before 1400 hours this afternoon they had placed black bunting on the firehouse. More to follow. Governor Martin O'Malley has ordered the Maryland State Flag flown at half-staff immediately. This is in honor of Firefighter Gene Kirchner, a 7 year veteran of the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company, who died today as a result of injuries suffered in the line of duty. The flag shall continue to be flown at half-staff until sunset on the day of interment. When the date of his funeral is determined, an updated notification will be sent.
This action is taken under the Protocol for the United States and Maryland State Flag. Any questions on the above should be directed to the Office of the Secretary of State.
