Purpose of Award: Recognition of Department Prevention Efforts

Background: The Maryland State Firemen’s Association (MSFA) sponsors an annual contest to recognize fire, rescue, and EMS departments efforts in promoting fire prevention in their communities. Contest awards are provided for companies who participate in a year-round fire prevention program as well as departments who participate in special projects, such as an open house or other fire prevention activities. An additional category recognizes departments who have shown an outstanding overall contribution to fire prevention and fire safety education activities. Starting in 1977, a seventh class in both Year Round Projects, and Single Projects was added. This will be for County Fire Prevention Committees to enter.
A project may be submitted by an organization within the department as long as it is verified by the president or chief. The awards are presented each year at the annual convention and conference for the following categories:

1st Place - $200. 6th Place - $50.
2nd Place - $100. 7th Place - $50.

(Award monies must be spent by the winning department/organization in the area of fire prevention)
Award Rules:

The department/company must be a member in good standing of the MSFA.

A cover letter on department letterhead is required to accompany all entries.

Any book entered, including scrapbooks, photo albums, or loose-leaf binders, can not excess 12 x 15.5 inches. The thickness of the book is not limited.

Slide presentations, slide/tape presentations and video tape presentations are acceptable.

Photographs and newspaper clippings must be dated and the sources indicated.

Entries must be in the hands of the State Fire Marshal’s Office by April 30th and must be marked with the proper entry classification (Area and Class).

All materials submitted should reflect activities of the previous calendar year (Jan. through Dec.)

Judges shall be appointed by the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the decision of the judges shall be final.

Any evidence of material from previous years will automatically disqualify the entry.

Any department/company entering any contest must have a representative at the MSFA Annual Convention and Conference.

Auxiliaries and Junior Companies any submit entries for their department as long as the president or chief forwards a cover letter as verification.
