Purpose of Award: Recognition of the best fire prevention entry in the line of parade at the Maryland State Firemen’s Association Annual Convention Parade

Award Administered By: Maryland State Firemen’s Association Convention Committee, Fire Prevention Committee and the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office
Background: The Governor’s Fire Prevention Trophy is awarded each year at the Maryland State Firemen’s Association (MSFA) Annual Convention and Conference for the best fire prevention float, demonstration, or entry in the line of parade. The award is in the form of a large permanent trophy. Awards are also awarded for second through fifth places.
Award Rules:
1. Clowns and commercial participants in the parade will not be eligible for this award.
2. Any individual, group, unity, float, etc., are eligible as long as they are in the line of parade and have been pre-judged.
3. Judging will be done by the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office.
4. Entries will be prejudged prior to the parade as a pre-announced location.
5. The decision of the judges will be final.
6. Judging will be on the following point system:
A. Theme and originality – (0 – 25 points) – Within a fire prevention subject area such as Fire Prevention Week, Home Inspections, Halloween, Christmas, Fire Safety, Spring Cleaning, Sparky, Smokey, Sweepy, Smoke Detectors, Etc.
B. Uniqueness in presentation – (0 – 25 points) – Construction aspects such as neatness, stability, occupant safety, and fire-safe materials.
C. Overall appearance – (0 – 25 points)
D. Conduct of participants – (0 – 25 points) – General conduct of, and how well participants carryout the theme of the entry.
Size, cost, and elaborateness are not a criteria.
