 MISS MSFA FIRE PREVENTION CONTEST

 

Purpose of Award: To select a spokesperson for MSFA Fire Prevention

Award Sponsor: MSFA Fire Prevention Committee

Award Administered By: MSFA Fire Prevention Committee with Out-Of-State Judges

Background:
The MSFA sponsors an annual Miss Fire Prevention Contest at the Annual Convention.  The individual selected will represent the MSFA at fire prevention, public education, and other activities throughout the State of Maryland, acting as a spokesperson for fire prevention and fire safety activities.

Award Rules:

1.     Must be single, never married, and have no children or be pregnant.

2.     Must be between sixteen (16) and twenty-four (24) years of age.  Contestants under the
       age of 18 years must have a parental/guardian consent form signed and must be
       chaperoned to all events by a representative of her county association or fire company.

3.     If seeking college or advanced education, contestant must attend a school in the State of
       Maryland.

4.     One contestant per county or Maryland Fire Chief’s Association Miss Fire Prevention.  If
       your county does not have a Miss Fire Prevention Contest, a decision will be endorsed at
       your county level as to whom will represent your county.  A letter of endorsement from the
       county association must accompany your application.

5.     A panel of judges in the preliminaries will interview contestants.  These judges will officiate
       the stage portion of the contest.

6.     Judges are not associated with the Maryland State Firemen's Association, Ladies Auxiliary,
       or members of Maryland companies or departments.

7.     Preliminary judging will be held during the afternoon, with the stage portion of the contest
       being held in the evening hours during the Annual Maryland State Firemen's Association
       Convention and Conference.  Contestants will be notified of the place, day, and time upon
       receipt of application.

8.     Stage judging will be calculated in a point system, with a total of 100 points.

A. Fire prevention knowledge                0 - 50 points

B. Speaking ability and poise                 0 - 40 points

C. General appearance                         0 - 10 points

9.  Preliminary judging will be calculated in the same point system as stage judging, with a total
     of 100 points.

A.  Fire prevention questions selected from a list sent to applicant.

B.  Contestant gives a presentation on a fire prevention related subject (3-4
     minutes.)

Interview questions by judges.

10. Application deadline is May 1.  If your county contest occurs after this deadline, then your
     current Miss Fire Prevention is eligible.

11. This is not a talent or beauty contest.

12. The contestants selected as M.S.F.A. Miss Fire Prevention and first runner-up are required
     to attend the following activities:  Convention activities on days and times designated (a
     tentative schedule includes the Prayer Breakfast, ride in parade, parade awards ceremony,
     and selecting winner of the $10,000. Raffle.

13. The newly elected M.S.F.A. Miss Fire Prevention and first runner-up must vacate any
     previously held state or county titles unless the term of the title will be completed within
     two months of her reign. In the event her county is unable to obtain a representative, the
     M.S.F.A. Miss Fire Prevention may continue her county role for a two month period.

14. Miss M.S.F.A. Fire Prevention and the first runner-up will take an oath of office immediately
     after they are crowned.

15. If M.S.F.A. Miss Fire Prevention is unable to attend any functions, it is her responsibility to
     contact the first runner-up to fulfill her commitment.

16. A monthly activities report must be submitted (by mail) by the Miss Fire Prevention and the
    
first runner-up, by the last day of each month to the Fire Prevention Committee
     Chairperson.  Forms will be provided.

17. A quarterly written report (summary of events and input) must be submitted by the Miss
      Fire Prevention and the first runner-up, to the Fire Prevention Committee Chairperson at
      the quarterly Fire Prevention Committee Meeting.  Forms will be provided.

18.An annual written report (summary of years events and activities) must be submitted by the
     Miss Fire Prevention and the first runner-up, by May 1st for possible inclusion into the
     Convention Program Book.

19. A packet of information will be given to the M.S.F.A. Miss Fire Prevention and her first
     runner-up containing:  Name, address, and phone list of the M.S.F.A. President, First Vice
     President, Second Vice President, Ladies Auxiliary President, Executive Committee Chair, and
     Fire Prevention Committee Chair;  Itinerary of the Governor’s Fire Prevention Conference,
     parades, banquets, carnivals, etc.; Upcoming seminars with topics and expenses; A
     Proceedings Book; and a set of ABC County Map Books (to be passed down each year.)

20. These rules are to become fully effective beginning with the year 2000.

The winner of the contest MUST attend the convention events as outlined in the contest rules and as listed in the agenda which will be given to all contestants.  You must also give full support to the M.S.F.A. and L.A.M.S.F.A. during your reign by attending State and county functions when requested, to the best of your ability.  If you win and you hold another State or county title and the term of those titles exceeds two months, you agree to give up those titles upon becoming M.S.F.A. Miss Fire Prevention.
