Week ending 4.22.2022
The MSFA is Moving Forward
The Maryland State Firemen’s Association, in accordance with our Mission Statement, serves promotes, advocates and represents the volunteer fire, rescue and emergency medical services of Maryland and has done so for nearly 130 years. The MSFA is an inclusive organization that is comprised of, and represents, ALL of the members of the volunteer fire, rescue, and emergency medical services of Maryland and many believe we have come to a point in time where we need to recognize this with a name change!
Many other state and county organizations have already made a name change to recognize the diversity of their members.
Three member companies have submitted name changes to be included on the ballot:
-Kensington VFD submitted “Maryland State Firefighters Association”
-Norrisville VFC submitted “Maryland State Fire and EMS Association”
-Rockville VFD submitted “Maryland State Volunteer Fire, Rescue and EMS Association
Voting Process
We need all delegates to understand to the voting process:
There will be two rounds of voting for the name change. Please pay attention to the conclusion of the 1st round of balloting.
During the 1st round of balloting for the name change, please select YES for the name you prefer most.
The name with the most votes over 50% will be presented on the second ballot so in the second round, only one name will appear.
Although this name may not be your 1st choice, it is the name that received the most votes and your YES vote will be needed to move it forward.
The new name needs to have 2/3rd majority to pass in the second round. Should a 2/3rd vote not be achieved, the ballot is ended and no change will take place.
Your Vote Counts and will guide the future of this association and the future of the volunteer service across the State of Maryland!

New! 3-day CISM class and 1-day Mental Health First Aid Class coming up in May be held at the EMS Care conference in Ocean City.
May 11-13, 2022; 8am – 5pm – “Assisting Individuals in Crisis Intervention and Group Crisis Intervention” Jeffrey T. Mitchell, Ph.D., CTS
This 3-day course combines ALL of the content of ICISF’s Assisting Individuals in Crisis & Group Crisis Intervention courses. Crisis Intervention is NOT psychotherapy; rather, it is a specialized acute emergency mental health intervention which requires specialized training. As physical first aid is to surgery so crisis intervention is to psychotherapy, thus, crisis intervention is sometimes called “emotional first aid”. Designed to present the core elements of a comprehensive, systematic, and multicomponent crisis intervention curriculum, this course will prepare participants to understand a wide range of crisis intervention services for both the individual and for groups. The course will outline Fundamentals of Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), and participants will leave with the knowledge and tools to provide several group crisis interventions, specifically demobilizations, defusings, and the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD). The need for appropriate follow-up services and referrals when necessary will also be discussed. Course Fee: $50 {24 Hrs, BLS: M / ALS: NCCP Individual}
May 13, 2022; 8am – 5pm – “Mental Health First Aid” Doria Fleisher, EMT
This course will develop awareness and understanding of and response to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training gives participants the skills they need to provide initial help to someone who may be experiencing a mental health concern or crisis. Our 5-step action plan will teach you the “what can I do” and “where can someone find help?” Course Fee: $25 {8 Hrs, BLS: L / ALS: NCCP Individual}
